The first Cultural Days of the ECB were dedicated to Portugal, the westernmost country of mainland Europe, and took place in spring, from 7 to 29 May 2003.
The ECB, in cooperation with the Portuguese Embassy and the Representation of the Instituto Camões in Berlin as well as the Portuguese Consulate General in Frankfurt am Main, offered a series of events of all kinds that allowed the cultural wealth of Portugal to shine in all its glory.
Portugal has always been well represented in the arts. Famous writers like Lídia Jorge and Francisco José Viegas joined us in the discovery of Portuguese literature. There was jazz, performed by the Portuguese singer Maria João, and, of course, some fado folk singing. The programme gave us the opportunity to enjoy one of the most representative films of Portuguese cinema, as well as audio-visual shows and other performances. There were some workshops for children as well. Last, but not least, was the chance to taste some Portuguese gastronomic specialities.
